GenEcho: Leveraging AI-Driven Role-Play Interactions to Foster Long-Distance Intergenerational Communication

Intergenerational communication (IGC) plays a crucial role in maintaining family relationships and supporting the wellbeing of both older and younger generations, but it is often hindered by challenges such as scheduling conflicts, value differences, and unequal interaction. To address these issues, we present GenEcho,an AI-powered asynchronous communication app driven by large language models (LLMs) that generates personalized role-play scenarios, automatically constructs conversation topics based on user preferences, and provides visual feedback to enhance interactions. A usability study involving both generations revealed positive attitudes towards the system, showing that GenEcho effectively improves the flexibility, engagement, and fairness of intergenerational communication. It also helps users better understand each other’s perspectives, making conversations more meaningful. By integrating LLM-powered personalization and digital role-play, this research highlights the value of AI-driven tools for bridging generational gaps, strengthening family bonds, and inspiring new directions in empathetic communication design.
